It is Day 14 of the Morning Quiet Time Challenge; our final day! 🙁 We’ve spent 2 weeks (re-)committing to a serious pursuit of revitalizing our relationship with God through spending the first 15 minutes of our day in our secret place with Him. I hope you’ve gotten as much out of Bob’s book as I have. “The Secrets of the Secret Place” is one of those books you can go back to time and time again when you need a little kick-start in your spiritual life.  So let’s get right into the last topic: watching.

If you missed any of the earlier posts, take this time to catch up before continuing:

NOTE: I’m basing this challenge on my friend Bob Sorge’s book “Secrets of the Secret Place,” if you’d like to follow along. I bought this book the first night I met and heard Bob speak, and it was a real blessing at a time I was struggling to get back into a daily morning prayer and Bible-reading time. I highly encourage you to buy your own copy today. I promise it will be one of the best investments you make. (Buy it here now. It’s on sale!)

Be Watching

No matter how close our relationship with God becomes, we will never know exactly what He has planned…or when it will happen. The only thing Jesus  advised as to the future was that we should “watch and pray.” He actually said it twice…and when Jesus repeats Himself, it’s important information, so we’d better pay attention!

Take heed, watch and pray… – Mark 13:33 NKJV

Watch and pray… – Mark 14:39 NKJV

As Christ followers, we are to be vigilant and be watching. We shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand and ignore what’s going on in the world around us; we should be aware of current events and how they relate to Scripture prophecy.

I struggle with this, personally. I cycle between following current events, then getting so depressed over the insanity and evil in our world that I turn a blind eye for a while. This world just makes my head – and my heart – hurt sometimes. 🙁

Gain Discernment

One of the greatest benefits of time spent in our secret place is gaining discernment that only comes from the Holy Spirit. Bob notes that it’s in the secret place that we:

  • “sharpen our spiritual senses to heaven’s promptings;
  • interpret current events through the lens of God’s Word;
  • make note of those portions and themes of Scripture which the Sprit has been currently surfacing;
  • calibrate our souls and minds to the stright ways of the Lord;
  • quiet our hearts long enough to listen;
  • gaze with rapt attention upon the throne of God; and
  • throw off all spiritual sleepiness by being ignited and renewed in love.”

Discernment is not just a spiritual gift that some are blessed with and others are not; discernment can cultivated by spending time in God’s Word. I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it: I believe we are experiencing the “birthing pains” of end times, so being knowledgeable of and alert to yet-unfulfilled Bible prophecies is more critical than ever!

Be Ready

Not only are we to be aware, we are to be ready. Jesus  told more than one story (again with the repetition) that represented His leaving (going back to Heaven for a time) and His coming back (the Rapture):

It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the door-keeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming – in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning – lest, coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! – Mark 13:32-37 NKJV

Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches! – Revelation 16:15

Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning: and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them.  And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. – Luke 12:35-40

* Side note from my “Heaven” book reading: Did you notice where verse 37 says Jesus will serve us dinner? I just cannot imagine the Son of God serving me! How about you?

If we use our time in our secret place wisely, we will be filled with knowledge and discernment as to our Master’s return. (Which I think our generation may be alive to witness…but that’s a whole other study. 😉 ) And Jesus promised that those He finds ready and watching will be blessed. I don’t know about you, but I want to be one of the blessed!

 Stay Committed

If you entered into this challenge because you’ve been stalled-out in your spiritual walk, I hope you’ve found this study as exciting as I have. I hope it’s given you a renewed desire to spend regular time with God in your secret place. And if you haven’t bought your own copy, I encourage you to do that today. I cannot recommend this – or any of Bob’s books – highly enough! I know the past 2 weeks has only whet my appetite to continue on through the book again. I guarantee you will find encouragement and insight in each and every chapter!

And if you kinda struggled to get into this challenge, I want to thank you for hanging in there with me these past two weeks. I hope you will stay committed and keep meeting Jesus each morning. I can tell you from personal experience, it gets easier, and it definitely brings blessings and peace you cannot find anywhere else. If I can help you in any way, please email me right now. I care about each and every one of you, and am happy to do whatever I can to encourage you! And remember….
