Welcome to Day 2 of the Morning Quiet Time Challenge! I’m so glad you’re here. 🙂 I hope you find the next 2 weeks to be helpful in revitalizing your relationship with God.
If you missed Day 1, we discussed that the first secret of the secret place is simply saying “Yes!” Before we proceed, go read it. I’ll wait. *short pause* Back now? Okay…..let’s move on with Day 2!
NOTE: I’m basing this challenge on my friend Bob Sorge’s book “Secrets of the Secret Place,” if you’d like to follow along. I bought this book the first night I met and heard Bob speak, and it was a real blessing at a time I was struggling to get back into a daily morning prayer and Bible-reading time. I highly encourage you to buy your own copy today. I promise it will be one of the best investments you make. (Buy it here now. It’s on sale!)
Don’t Forget To Shut The Door
In Jesus’ sermon on the mount, when He begins to speak about prayer, He doesn’t start with how to pray (the Lord’s Prayer), He starts with telling us where to pray: behind shut doors.
But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. – Matthew 6:6
Typical of Jesus, His command to pray includes a promise. Actually, two! First…..God is already waiting for us in our secret place. No matter if we go there first thing in the morning, or return 10 times during the day, He is there….eager to spend time just with us! Secondly, if we go to our secret place to spend time alone with God, He will reward us for our obedience.
For me, the greatest reward of spending the very first part of my day with God is the peace and order that follows me throughout the rest of my day. I’m not saying things never go awry, or that I never experience stress just because I spend a few minutes in prayer in the morning. I’m just more likely to stop and look to God for direction and patience if I had that quiet time with Him early-on. (And I”m more likely to ask Him to get ahold of my tongue before I say something stupid and cause myself unnecessary headaches. *rolls eyes at self*)
Your Feelings Don’t Matter
Well…..it’s not that they don’t matter. It’s just that regardless of how you’re feeling when you enter your secret place, God is there and can deal with whatever emotional state you’re in. Most of the time, even when I’m angry or a sobbing mess, just the act of entering His Presence brings a “peace that passeth all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). So don’t let your feelings get in the way of spending quiet time with God. That’s just the enemy’s attempt to distract you because he knows the power of the secret place. When you enter your secret place, God is there and can deal with whatever emotional state you're in. - Kimberly Sutor Click To Tweet
Building Your Foundation
These next 2 weeks of committing to starting your day with just 15 minutes of quiet time in your secret place is laying the foundation to a revitalized relationship with God. Maybe you remember Jesus telling the story of the wise man who built his house upon the rock? That’s what you’re doing in this challenge! So rock on, gf! (*snort* See what I did there? “Rock” on?? Oh, sometimes I crack myself up….as my son used to say as a preschooler.)
We all know storms will come in life. Isn’t it better to be prepared for them? Use the time in your secret place to build up God’s wall of protection around your head and your heart. Get reacquainted with the God of the universe who created you for a very specific purpose. Get in the habit of talking with Him as a friend….not just as some distant being. Surrender 15 minutes each morning to allow His peace to flow through you and into the rest of your day. See what a difference that makes!
Write It Down
If you’ve read much of anything I’ve written, you’ve heard me say over and over how integral journaling is to me. This challenge is a perfect time – if you don’t already – to get a little blank book, or even just a legal pad, and write down your thoughts and feelings at the end of the day. Did you spend time in your secret place? Did you notice any difference in how you felt the rest of the day? Do you feel a change in how you’re relating to God? These are things you should pay attention to…..because I promise God does. 🙂
There is great power in the secret place…..so press into it, gf! And remember….
