Welcome to Day 1 of the Morning Quiet Time Challenge! I’m so glad you’re here. 🙂 I hope you find the next 2 weeks to be helpful in revitalizing your relationship with God. I’m so excited to get started….so let’s get to it!

The Secret Of The Secret Place

A few years ago, my husband and I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Bob Sorge. He is an exceptional Bible teacher, and just a great, funny guy! 🙂 We bought a few of his books that first night (and many more since), and one has really drawn me in: Secrets of the Secret Place.

Say Yes And Plan For Success

Just like with a new diet or exercise program, the first step to success is committing to it; to say, “Yes!” Not just saying you’re going to do it, but planning for our success! In this challenge, that may mean re-setting your alarm to go off 15 minutes earlier.

Make Space For It

Another key elements to a “successful” quiet time with Jesus is making space for it. I know just waking up a little earlier may be a struggle. So why not program a hot pot of coffee to be ready and waiting for you when you finish?

And don’t just lie in bed and “phone in” your 15 minutes; God deserves more than a half-hearted effort. 😉 Create a special quiet-time space for yourself: Set your Bible next to your favorite chair, or by the patio door so you can watch the sunrise. Wherever you decide, make your quiet time place a special place for you to commune with the God of the universe.

Prepare Yourself

It may be a little difficult at first, trying to have a meaningful quiet time early in the morning if you’re not used to it. That’s okay! Give yourself a little grace. You know what I say: It’s a process. *giggle* Here’s what I do:

  1. Remove yourself from any distractions (or vice-versa). That means no TV or radio on in the background. No one else around who could interrupt. It’s only 15 minutes, so find a place of solitude where you can just be alone with God.
  2. Close your eyes and relax.
  3. Take a deep breath through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. (You know, “yoga breathing.” After a night’s sleep, this will really get the oxygen flowing to your brain so you can focus on this, the most important time of your day.)
  4. Greet God. I use this little prayer:

Father God….I humbly enter this, my secret place, and acknowledge I am in the Presence of the One True God. Thank You for meeting me here.

Forgive me so I can stand in Your Presence clean and holy. Shut out all distractions, and tune my heart only to You, for I know things only change when I hear Your voice. Speak to me now, Father.

Get Reacquainted

Use this first day to just reconnect with your heavenly Father. Even though He already knows, get used to talking with Him again. (I usually pray aloud; it’s a psychology thing….your subconscious “believes” what it hears your self say…so be positive and intentional with the words you choose.)

Tell God that you’re committing to time with Him in your secret place in the mornings for the next 2 weeks. Ask Him to put a hedge of protection around your mind and your body to ensure you are discipline in getting up early, and to being able to focus on Him before anything else.

Ask Him to bless your obedience in showing up to be with Him first each day….because you really are doing this to renew your relationship. Pray Psalm 91:1 (New King James) to Him:

Father God, You promise that whoever “dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” I claim that promise this morning…and for the next 13 mornings! Instill in me a desire to spend the first part of every day in Your Presence, then let me abide in the peace of Your shadow the rest of the day.

Be On Guard

I guarantee you: Satan will not like that you have committed yourself to spending the most important part of your day with Jesus! He will try everything he can to distract you over the next 14 days.

He may interrupt your sleep so you’re tempted to skip it and sleep in that extra 15 minutes. (Is 15 minutes more sleep really going to change your day? I think not. But 15 minutes with God will!) He may cloud your brain with a little morning fog to try to keep you from connecting with God. There’s no telling what he’ll try….but it’s all because he knows how powerful even just a little quiet time with Jesus is!

There’s No Hard and Fast Rules Here

There’s no hard and fast rules in how you spend your 15 minutes of quiet time during this challenge. All that we’re going for is a dedicated time to commune with our Creator. But I promise you this: When you commit yourself to your secret place, God will reward your obedience. He will ignite a  growing desire to spend time with Him, and in His Word. And that can change your whole life, not just today!

There is great power in the secret place…..so press into it, gf! And remember….
