For the month of May, we will be Praying Through The Proverbs. Unlike a Bible study, we will simply pray a few key Scriptures each day. We’ll concentrate on how these verses apply to our individual lives, and ask God to reveal to us if there is anything specific we need to repent of or work on. Today we look at Chapter 28.*

Today’s verses address leadership and authority.

Key Verses in Chapter 28:

v.2  When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order.

Political and social instability usually result in frequent changes in leadership….but wise and just rulers very often enjoy lengthy terms.

This also applies to those in positions of authority in the workplace. If you are not a wise and just manager, there will be dissention among your staff. Often, employees may consider someone other than their manager as their real leader.

v.15  Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked man ruling over a helpless people.

A leader who attacks and brings misery on  those he rules will only be feared; never respected.  Most likely, those under his authority will try to remove him from power.

v.16  A tyrannical ruler lacks judgement, but he who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long life.

The oppressive ruler is usually short-lived. But a ruler whose goal is to help his people and improve their lives will be admired and supported.

v.28  When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive.

Evil rulers force their people into hiding; they live in constant fear. But a righteous ruler encourages his people to improve and thrive, building an environment of community and peace.

My Prayer

Father God, I humbly enter this, my secret place, and acknowledge I am in the Presence of the One True God. Thank You for meeting me here. Forgive me so I can stand in Your Presence clean and holy.

I pray for those in leadership….in my church, in my community, in our nation, and around the world. Raise up godly men and women to positions of authority that will seek Your counsel and do their best to improve the lives of those they represent. Bring healing where it is needed, and turn our collective hearts back to You, Father. Protect those who suffer under evil authorities. Bring those rules crashing down, and replace them with rigtheous leaders.

And when I am in a position of authority – whether it’s in my family, my work, at church, or wherever….help me to be prayerful in my decision-making, and to always respect and listen to and encourage those I am leading. I want to be the kind of leader who is trusted and repsected because Your love and grace is clearly evident in me. Whatever I do, may You be glorified through it, Father.

I pray these things in  Jesus’ Name…
