For the month of May, we will be Praying Through The Proverbs. Unlike a Bible study, we will simply pray a few key Scriptures each day. We’ll concentrate on how these verses apply to our individual lives, and ask God to reveal to us if there is anything specific we need to repent of or work on. Today let’s look at Chapter 22.*
Today’s verses speak to how we deal with the poor among us.
Key Verses in Chapter 22:
v.2 Rich and poor have this in common: the LORD is the Maker of them all.
We are no different in God’s eyes, rich or poor, so we should always treat one another as equals. The poor may work for the rich….but the rich give jobs to the poor. The poor shouldn’t envy the rich because there is great responsibility that goes with wealth. And the wealthy shouldn’t oppress the poor, because they already have a “master” watching over their work. We should all live in harmony as brothers and sisters in Christ.
v.9 A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
God expects – and rewards – our generosity. “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38). And we all remember Jesus’ own words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35).
v.22-23 Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who plunder them.
We are not to exploit the poor simply because they are poor, and we should not judge someone as guilty just because they cannot afford to plead their case in court. Countless times the Scriptures tell us God helps those who can’t help themselves. He is an advocate and defender of the poor.
Father God, I humbly enter this, my secret place, and acknowledge I am in the Presence of the One True God. Thank You for meeting me here. Forgive me so I can stand in Your Presence clean and holy.
Thank You for always providing for my every need, and more. Forgive me for ever taking Your blessings for granted. Help me to be more mindful of my abundance, and create in me a heart that yearns for the privilege of sharing my wealth to further Your kingdom work! Fill me with a desire to give not just generously, but sacrificially….whether through an offering plate, or a random act of kindness. I surrender my debt and my wealth to You. Help me to be a wise steward of Your blessings and channel Your abundance through me in a manner that brings glory to Your Name.
Give me a Jesus heart that notices “the least of these” around me, and a spirit of compassion to act on the opportunities that arise in my everyday to be more generous with my money, with my time, and with my love. Don’t allow my own ego to cause me to judge another based on his financial status. Instead, continually remind me that You created us all the same…in Your image. Let Your love and mercy flow through me, Father.
It’s in Jesus’ Name I pray…
