For the month of May, we will be Praying Through The Proverbs. Unlike a Bible study, we will simply pray a few key Scriptures each day. We’ll concentrate on how these verses apply to our individual lives, and ask God to reveal to us if there is anything specific we need to repent of or work on. Let’s take a look into Chapter 5* today.

Key Verses in Chapter 5:

v.3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil;

v.6 …her paths are crooked, but she knows it not.

Proverbs contains many warnings against the “adulteress.”  This reference includes both sexual immorality or any temptation to do wrong.

We should be on our guard against anyone who uses flatter or smooth speech to entice us into sin. The “enticer” may not even be aware that what they are asking us to do is sinful…but as believers, we know, and we must choose wisely. That may include walking away from temptation….or even completely cutting that person out of your life.

v.12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!” How my heart spurned correction!

Don’t wait until you’ve reached a point of regret! Resistance is much easier if you decide beforehand how you will act when your face temptation.

v. 15 Drink water from your own cistern,  running water from your own well.

The reference to water symbolizes marital faithfulness. In Old Testament times, it was a crime to steal water from another’s well, just as it was a crime to commit adultery with another man’s wife; both acts endangered the health and security of the entire family.

v.18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.

Ladies, this applies to us wives, too. God designed marriage – and sex – to be a source of lifelong pleasure and enjoyment for both husband and wife.

v.21 For a man’s ways are in full view of the LORD, and He examines all his paths.

v.22-23 The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.

God sees every choice we make…and our poor choices always catch up with us! 🙁 We have no one to blame but ourselves, when we become ensnared by sin, and it is our own lack of discipline that brings negative consequences into our lives.

My Prayer

Father God, I humbly enter this, my secret place, and acknowledge I am in the Presence of the One True God. Thank You for meeting me here. Forgive me so I can stand in Your Presence clean and holy.

Guard my heart from enemy lies, Father. Help me discern between those who speak with sincerity and those who only speak words of deception. Bring YOUR words of Truth into my mind to shore me up when my ego is tempted to slip into their snare. Help me stand firm in my decision to adhere to Your commands…for I know they bring Life and Peace.

I ask that You place an extra hedge of protection around my marriage. Thank You for the blessings you have brought into our lives by joining us together as one. Protect us from any attempt by the enemy to gain a foothold between us. Help us to always put You at our center, and to put the needs of the other above our own. Grow the roots of our love deeper every day, and make our time of intimacy pleasurable for us both, bonding us even closer together.

I know I will be faced with hundreds of decisions today. Help me choose wisely. I claim Your promise that if I seek You, LORD, I fill find You if I look for You will all my heart and with all my soul (Deut 4:29). I surrender this day to You. Give me clarity as to what You would have me do today that will bring You glory.

I pray these things in the powerful Name of Jesus….
