We’ve spent a lot of time – 9 weeks, to be exact – digging into prayer. And most of the focus has been on figuring out what to circle in prayer, and how to pray through our BIG dreams. It’s exciting when we hear God whisper our dream to us…and when we see Him answer our prayers. But what about when the answer is no?

Our Lists Of Whys

Probably the most difficult times in our lives are when we’ve prayed hard, but God says no….and we don’t know why. Everyone has their own list of Whys: Why can’t I have a baby? Why did our marriage fail? Why did our children choose a dangerous path? Why can’t I be healed? Why do babies die? These are the secret things that belong to the LORD our God, and we may never know the answer until we meet Him face-to-face.

The secret things belong to the LORD our God… – Deuteronomy 29:29

When God’s answer is no – and our faith is tested – the only question we may find an answer to in this lifetime is whether or not God has a plan for us. Will we trust God has a reason beyond what our minds can reason? Will we continue praying hard even when it’s hardest to pray?

No Hope In Sight

We all want to see miracles in our lives….but sometimes we don’t like being in a situation that necessitates one. We don’t like being caught between a rock and a hard place. We would prefer God remove the rock before we ever cross it in our path. But if He always cleared the path and we never had to confront adversity or pain, that might not be the best opportunity for His glory to shine the brightest. Sometimes God’s plan involves leading us to a place where we have nowhere to run. Where we’re at a dead end, and there’s no hope in sight. Will we fold…or will we turn to God?

God Just Waits

We’ve all had experience where God answered before we even realized what the question was. (That’s always nice, isn’t it?) But we’ve also all gone through times where it seems God just waits. In last week’s devotion, I talked about how God has a tendency to give us just enough just in time. We forget that God’s highest priority is His greatest glory…not our comfort. But if we are committed to praying through – even when it involves pain and heartache for us – then we will wait on Him. We have to trust that God will fight our battles when we live in obedience to Him. Even when we feel helpless. Even when we don’t think our hearts can take any more pain. Even when our minds can’t fathom how any good will come of this circumstance.

God Is Faithful

But gf….God promised that He will provide everything we need to navigate every circumstance we encounter in this life….good or bad. So hold on to that promise. Even when God’s answer is, “No,” He has a good reason. God is faithful. Even when we cannot fathom how this works for our good….remember that it’s not about us; it’s always about Him. Just hold on. There is no dead end in Christ; He will open a new path.
