Take The Chaos Mode Quiz
Find out if you are living in chaos and take steps to remedy the problem. Stop living minute-to-minute and start enjoying life.
A) Are you very organized in one aspect of your life, for example, at work, but haven’t had time to read a book or exercise in three weeks?
B) Do you know exactly what needs to be done today, but won’t know what needs to be done tomorrow until you check the calendar before bedtime?
C) Do you have tasks that have been on your To Do list for a month?
D) Do you feel if someone asks you to do one more thing you will lose it?/span>
If you answered yes to any of the above, you are living in what I call “Chaos Mode” and it is not a happy place to be. These days it seems as if everyone is running around crazed with too much to do. We even brag about how busy we are. “Chaos is the new normal,” I’ve heard people say. Is this really the way we want to live our lives? Being stressed all the time? So busy that we can’t really focus on the people and activities that feed our souls?
So, how do we get out of Chaos Mode?
Invest in a good planner (if you like to write things down) or find a good app. I use Calengoo because I have a gmail account, it color codes by family member and sends out reminders. This list of calendar apps can help as well.
Most importantly, invest in yourself, your stress level and your sanity. Carve out time during the week (Sunday is a good time) to sit with your calendar and get your week…hey, even your next two weeks, in order. Remove yourself to a coffee shop if you need to. Make sure your family understands that this time is yours every week, no matter what.
Dump and Delegate
Take a piece of paper and section it according to the areas of your life where you are responsible for certain activities. Your list might include:
- Volunteering for daughter’s activities (Girl Scouts? Ballet? Volleyball?)
- Volunteering for son’s activities (Football? PTA President?)
- Church activities
- Taking care of pets
Just keep listing everything you are in charge of.
Then take a colored pen and start to mark items off that list. Can your son feed the dogs each night? Can your daughter start a few tasks to get dinner on the table? Is there a neighbor kid who’d like to earn a little pocket money to help with cleaning? Be creative. You do not have to do everything. I say this because I was that person who thought I had to do everything; that it wouldn’t be done right unless I did it, that the school would come crashing down if I didn’t volunteer each time I was asked. Know what? Plenty gets done without me. My way is not the only way, and-miraculously, the school has found other volunteers when I am not available.
Free Up Some Funds
Are there a few tools that would make your life easier? Better vacuum? Crock pot? Perhaps move some funds around and buy what you need to make your life easier.
I have a friend who constantly fights with her husband about housework. It is a major source of stress in their home and marriage. Yet they spend a lot of money on concert tickets. When she called to tell me of another fight about housework, I gently suggested that maybe they decrease the number of concerts they go to each year and invest in a house cleaning service. It is important to have special events in your life and have fun, but your day-to-day happiness is important, too.
Just Say No
I mean it. You are allowed to fill your days as you see fit. Just because the vast majority of America wants to run around crazed and sleep-deprived doesn’t mean you have to, as well. As my mother used to say, “Life isn’t a dress rehearsal.” Meaning, you only get one life. How do you want to spend it?
